⋆ An Examiners’ Award for Excellence goes to Jana Kibbi for her project ‘Complex Texts’. The examiners commend the particularly high quality of the text-handling and exploration of complex typographic issues across this book series.

MACD Student work

Complex Texts is a series design developed as part of my masters in Book Design at the University of Reading. The project explores how to accommodate radically different textual structures, spanning novels, plays, poetry, philosophy, and religious texts. The design prioritises clarity, hierarchy, and reader immersion, with particular attention given to paratextual material such as introductions, explanatory notes, bibliographies, and navigational elements, ensuring that complex information remains legible and well integrated within the text.

The project resulted in a set of six printed and sewn prototype books, alongside a detailed typesetting specification documenting the design system and its application across the series.
